All 19 Reviews

From one metal artist to another, this is my review:
The actual structure of the song is good. I hear plenty of room for badass lyrics and shear power.

However, given all the excellent plugins you are using for the actual metal aspect (SD w/ MF expansion and Amplitube 3), you have some work to do on those sounds.
Drums:
The kick was all treble, no bass, and had that boxy sound. The snare is alright, but needs more presence and low end. The cymbals are almost spot on, maybe push them back and to the sides some more.
Guitars:
The guitars had a LOT of buzz and had nowhere near enough dimension to them, and it sounds like you have the gain and distortion all the way up on it, which doesn't help. I couldn't really make out separate notes. If I may, I recommend you get Le456 and LeCab (free VSTs, Le465 is an incredible ENGL emulation, LeCab is a cab emulator) and get God's Cab 1.4 (free impulse files for LeCab, has many different mic/cab/placement/distance impulses). Both LePou and God's Cab team did an awesome job and I think you'd get a better sound from those.
Orchestral:
The theme is good, but in MDM, the symphonic parts are usually in the background of the song while the actual metal sections are the focus. Expand the dimensions on those to push them to the outside and the rear a bit for more depth.

For a work in progress, it's coming along nicely. Put more work into the actual sound since you have the writing down for the most part (I'm guessing this isn't going to be a 2 minute song en totale). I'm interested to see what the lyrical and vocal theme of this piece ends up being.

If you need some help with SD, I have a few home-made presets you can use/play with. I think they'd give you a good basis for a solid drum sound. If you want them, send me a PM. I'm happy to help.

Keep up the good work!

Lich responds:

Thanks for the lengthy review, much appreciated.

I generally have big mixing issues with the track as a whole and when I remaster the whole thing when it's done I shall take your advice and try my best to make it sound better.
I do have the screamer option on both the Lead and the Rythem in Shreddage, I can turn them off and make the guitars eligible.

thanks for offering me your SD presets. If I have any trouble, I'll know who to PM :)

Badass for sure brother!

If I could change anything, at the end of the first verse, I would hold the 'hell' out longer with a higher scream. In my mind, that would give it an assload of evil emphasis. Also, consider dubbing with a high and low vocal section on some parts to give it a more chorused sound and overall brutality.

Overall, brutal viking skull f**king METUL! Id like to hear more from you. Perhaps something more sinister >:D

Experience: gigging musician in for what...5 years. 2 bands, both of which I do vocals in.

LimeDisciple responds:

Ooo your right. I listened to it a couple times and that would've stretched out the emotion and made it seem more like a scream of pain, rather than just a scream. As far as the high and low, I disagree because it would've taken alot of frequency space and made the already wide vocals too big and took away from the drums and bass. Thanks for the review friend!

For whatever reason, this song sounds like it would roll the credits to a happy ending to a GameBoy Color game. Ah, the good ol' days.

You made me nostalgic. First time a song has done that.

Good stuff, I dig it. Feel free to check my tunes out if you feel so inclined.

8BitPICE responds:

Thank you haha! :) i will

It had most of the dubstep elements in it, but the track lacked intensity and seemed overly repetitive. Give it some more work and you could probably make a really good mix.

Give my stuff a listen and leave your thoughts man.

SkullDrone responds:

Hey, yeah i know it is fairly repetitive and shit, but i kinda noticed that... well, most dubstep songs are (bass canon, for example).

It did not take me TOO long to make and i am in dear need of some new sounds in FL -__-
Do you know where to get a bass that sounds like a voice (skrillex, flux pavillion shit) for free?
Thanks for the comment bud :D

Very Nice

I love the sound you're getting out of the POD Live modeler, a fellow metal guitarist (IE, Me) appreciates a good crunch with some actual harmonies added in. Have you ever considered trying out Superior Drummer 2.1 by Toontrack? That's what I use in all my songs; I've been tweaking it for almost a year now, and I'm still learning about it.

Overall, like the feel of this song, I just feel it could stand to have some beef added to the drums. Keep it up :D

Back-From-Purgatory responds:

I'm pretty satisfied with EZDrummer to be honest and can't really afford to get another drum VST ATM. Although I do agree that my drums tend to sound a little weak, I'd imagine that's more to do with my lack of effort in beefing them up than it is EZDrummer itself.

I do plan on giving my drums sound an overhaul though in the near future, as I'd really love for them to have more punch to them without pushing my tracks into clipping.

Thanks for the review!

A few notes

I can tell this was all done with FL Studio. The bass synthing was good. Try to avoid using FL Slayer, its nasty. Work on drums more, and this could be good

AfflictedNation responds:

thanks for input

The guitars are deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep! I like that. But me thinks the bass in the guitars overpowers the actual tone a liiittle bit. Dude's right, drums are slightly off, but hey, they're drummers, I have that same problem with ours. I think that might be the bass guitar being overpowering. Idk, id say go thru and look at your peaks to see where everyone stands.

Other than that, sexy work. Add some vocals in there with that, and I'd buy it.

Check my shit out

CRF250 responds:

We're gonna drop lyrics on all our songs eventually.

On my way! ;)

Sexy

Drop A#, are you breaking my balls or what?!? I hope that's at least a 7 string you're using, I think it's illegal to tune a 6 string down that low.

All I can say is bring the bass down a bit in the bass drum and shoot its mids up alot for a better metal boom.

Check out my stuff!

-Tim

350teric responds:

Nope it's a regular 6 string and I agree that is illegal to tune it so low... That's why I'm saving some money for an 8 string and that would be a completely new experience! The song needs a little more production yes, but I don't have that much time to work on it.

Check my stuff in future for some other thrills! :)

Few things...

The click in the bass drum I like, but I'm a guy that needs some ass to toss that click up more. Snare is mic'd well. Bring the cymbals up some, toss a little shimmer EQ in 'em, and the drum track would be badass.

Vocal-wise, you have a good scream. Put some post work on it, toss a little clarity in the EQ, spread it so it doesn't sound like it's coming from my eyeballs thru headphones. Split the singing and screaming apart, make em both prominent in their own fields more, and you'll have a sound I like.

Guitars are fairly OK, bring the highs down a smidge, and turn em up so they're a bit more prominent.

Bass guitar, add some highs to it, I can't hear it without my sub on.

Other than that, pretty good track. Wanted to offer my advice from my recording endeavors. Check out my stuff!

VenenoMortal responds:

Thanks for the review! looking at your stuff now :p

Left 4 Robicide?

I like it alot. Makes me think of left 4 dead, but its a robot zombie apocalypse. The drum riff at 1:10 brought me back to marching band. Was pretty amusing

Breed responds:

Yea sorry for the corny sounding african drums. I can't have a song without a percussion solo though.
